The Comprehensive Guide to Caring for Your Teeth During Metal Braces Treatment with Alpha Clinics

Making the decision to get metal braces is the first and most important step in your journey towards achieving the perfect smile and correct alignment you have always dreamed of. However, once the braces are placed, a new phase begins that requires extra commitment and a special routine to care for your oral health.
We at Alpha Dental Clinics accompany you every step of the way on this journey. Because we know that the metal wires and brackets make cleaning your teeth a daily challenge, we have prepared this comprehensive guide for you to ensure you reach the end of your treatment period with straight, clean teeth, and healthy, inflammation-free gums.

Why Do Your Teeth Need Extra Care During Braces Treatment?
Metal braces, by their nature, create tiny angles and spaces (between the wires and brackets) that serve as an ideal environment for food particles to hide and bacteria (plaque) to accumulate. If this plaque is not removed regularly, it quickly leads to:
Gum Inflammation and Swelling: Which causes bleeding and pain when brushing your teeth.
Tooth Decay: And cavities form around and under the brackets.
White Spots (Decalcification): These are permanent spots resulting from the erosion of tooth enamel caused by bacterial acids. They appear clearly as white marks around the bracket area after the braces are removed, ruining the aesthetic appearance of your new smile.
The "Alpha Clinics" Routine for Cleaning Teeth with Metal Braces
To maintain your teeth and protect them from these problems, brushing your teeth after every meal (not just twice a day) must become an essential habit. Here are the correct steps and tools:
1. Regular Toothbrush and Orthodontic Brush (Ortho Brush)
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. It is preferable to use a toothbrush specifically designed for braces (where the middle bristles are shorter to fit the size of the metal brackets).
Place the brush at a 45-degree angle above the bracket and clean with a gentle circular motion, then repeat the same angle from below the bracket to ensure all sides are cleaned.
2. Interdental Brush
This tiny brush (which looks like a pine tree) is the orthodontic patient's secret weapon! Use it to gently insert it under the metal wire and between the brackets to clean the areas that a regular toothbrush cannot reach.
3. Dental Floss (Traditional or Water)
Cleaning between your teeth is absolutely inevitable. Using regular floss can be difficult with the wire in place, so we recommend using "Super Floss" (a specialized floss with a stiff end that is easy to insert under the wire).
Water Flosser: This is an excellent investment that we highly recommend at Alpha Clinics. It uses the power of a water stream to remove food particles and plaque from under the wires and between the teeth with high efficiency and great ease.
4. Fluoride Mouthwash
Use a medical mouthwash containing fluoride once a day before bed (or as advised by your doctor). Fluoride acts as a protective shield that strengthens tooth enamel and prevents the appearance of white spots and cavities.
The "Do Not Eat" List: Foods You Must Avoid Completely
Eating inappropriate foods not only harms your teeth, but it also leads to broken brackets or bent wires, which requires emergency visits to the clinic and delays the treatment duration! Here is what you must avoid:
Hard and Crunchy Foods: Such as nuts, ice cubes, popcorn (due to unpopped kernels), and hard candies.
Sticky and Chewy Foods: Such as caramel, toffee, chewing gum, and marshmallows. These foods stick strongly to the wires and are very difficult to clean, and they may pull the brackets out of place.
Foods That Require Biting with Front Teeth: Such as whole apples, uncooked carrots, corn on the cob, or tough burger buns. (Tip: You can eat these healthy foods provided you cut them into very small pieces and chew them on your back teeth).
First Aid for Orthodontic Emergencies
Protruding Metal Wire: As your teeth move, the end of the wire may protrude at the back and cut the inside of your cheek. Use "Orthodontic Wax" - which we provide for you at the clinic - take a small piece, roll it with your fingers, and place it over the sharp part to protect your mouth until your visit to us.
Detached Bracket: If a bracket breaks but remains attached to the wire, place orthodontic wax on it to hold it in place, and contact us to book an appointment to reattach it.
The Importance of Regular Visits at Alpha Clinics
Your scheduled visits to the orthodontist at Alpha Clinics are not just for tightening wires and adjusting the path of your teeth. Rather, they are an opportunity for our doctors to assess the health of your gums and ensure there is no early decay.
We also emphasize the necessity of booking a "Professional Tartar Cleaning" session every 4 to 6 months during the braces treatment period, where we use specialized equipment in the clinic to clean the calcifications that you could not remove at home, ensuring you have healthy, pink gums throughout the treatment period.
The orthodontic journey is a team effort between you and your doctor! Your commitment to these instructions will make the "braces removal" day a happy day where you are crowned with a dazzling, flawless smile.
